Recently, I had the opportunity to run a multi-month, intensive Strategic Sales Partnership Development program for one of our clients. Its goal was to strengthen sales relationships, deepen collaboration with a key business partner, improve the selling and negotiation skills of sales managers and representatives, and build stronger teamwork and trust. Because the program delivered the results the client wanted, and because I think it could be inspiring for others, I decided to share it with you.
I've spent practically my entire career in business. As a regional director, I was responsible for one of four regions for five years. But I've also gained valuable experience in other roles — as director of external distribution, sales support manager, and head of a Key Account Manager team. I love being able to draw on that experience to help build a successful sales team.
Strategic sales partnership development
I see it this way: in today's competitive environment, having a great product isn't enough — that's simply the baseline. What you need is a team that's high-performing, unified, and ready to respond to shifting market dynamics and a tough competitive landscape. You need a team with strong product knowledge and selling skills, one that's able to build and maintain strong, functional partnerships.
Last year, our client focused on building a clear business strategy, and now faced the real challenge of implementing it in the day-to-day work of sales teams across the regions. So together, we built a program designed to:
translate the company's strategy into tactical plans and standards at the regional level, to ensure stable collaboration with the strategic partner's distribution network,
deepen close collaboration and teamwork within the sales team, both within and across regions, and align it around shared business goals,
set up effective, functional processes.
We built the program around the client's specific needs and requirements, while also drawing on our own extensive experience in sales, building strategic partnerships, and industry and market knowledge.
5 key pillars of the program
Tactical plan preparation: Breaking down the company's overall strategy into a concrete regional tactical plan and ensuring alignment with the partner's strategy.
Negotiating and closing deals: The ability to lead business negotiations aimed at closing partnership agreements that support business goals.
Monitoring performance and open feedback: Evaluating progress against set goals, and defining how, to whom, and how often feedback is given.
Effective, functional processes: Mapping existing processes, sharing best practices, and preparing proposals for potential improvements and simplification.
Strategic reporting: Defining the shape of reporting at the national and regional level, to serve as a cornerstone for management and decision-making.
The goal was to bring change to how the region operated and increase professionalism to support further organic growth. Another goal was to boost sales results and maintain high customer loyalty.
Combining theory and practice with active participation from everyone involved
The program combined several different approaches. It covered theory in the competencies being developed while also drawing on the program leader's practical experience. It encouraged participants to get actively involved — sharing experiences, role-playing, or filming short scenes on camera. Selected guests with relevant expertise also joined the sessions, and interaction with the partner continued between sessions through specific tasks assigned to participants.
We decided to regularly track and evaluate how successfully the strategic priorities were being put into practice, using defined OKRs. We designed these to reflect the deeper goals behind the program.
Here are a few examples:
Stable growth in new business: Not just increasing sales volume, but also winning new clients and market segments.
Maximizing management of the existing client base: Ensuring existing clients get the best product and service for their needs.
First-class advisory service: Reaching a professional level of client service aimed at maximizing client satisfaction and loyalty, and generating referrals to help acquire new clients.
Program results: better sales performance, internal communication, and knowledge sharing
Thanks to this program, we were able to sharpen the competencies of the client's sales managers and representatives and establish functional agreements between the client and the strategic partner across all regions. The result was a significant boost in performance and sales results. The program also improved internal communication, mutual knowledge sharing, and teamwork.
Participant feedback on the program was extremely positive. They particularly valued its practical focus, which emphasized the immediate usability of the knowledge and skills gained. They also spoke highly of the program's impact on their competencies, which in turn boosted their confidence in dealing with the partner. And last but not least, they appreciated the deeper trust and collaboration it built within the team.
I'm grateful for this opportunity and I look forward to more chances to help sales teams on their path to success.
